Immortal Romance slot machine review — should you play in New Zealand?
Immortal Romance is one of Microgaming’s most enduring video slots, blending a gothic vampire love-story with modern slot mechanics. First launched over a decade ago, it remains popular in New Zealand online casinos thanks to its atmospheric theme, engaging bonus system and the much-talked-about Wild Desire feature. This review walks through the gameplay, features, RTP, presentation and what Kiwi players should expect.
Quick overview
Immortal Romance runs on a 5-reel format with 243 ways to win rather than traditional paylines, which means winning combinations are created by matching symbols across adjacent reels from left to right. The game is developed by Microgaming and is well known for its Chamber of Spins bonus, a multi-tier free spins wheel linked to the game’s central characters.
Gameplay and mechanics
Gameplay is straightforward and suitable for both newcomers and experienced players. You select your stake and spin; wins are formed by landing matching symbols on adjacent reels. The slot uses a mix of character and card-style symbols, with higher payouts for the themed icons.
Two mechanics stand out: a scatter-triggered Chamber of Spins and the Wild Desire feature, which can dramatically change the state of the reels. Wilds substitute for regular symbols to complete winning combinations, and the Wild Desire feature occasionally turns multiple reels completely wild during base play, often resulting in sizeable wins.
Bonuses and special features
Bonuses are where Immortal Romance earns its reputation. The Chamber of Spins is a multi-level free spins feature tied to four main characters, each providing a different twist on the free spins round. These character levels are unlocked progressively and add variety to your sessions.
- Chamber of Spins — Triggered by scatter symbols, this feature offers a range of free spins modes with varying modifiers and extra perks depending on the character selected or unlocked.
- Wild Desire — A random base-game feature that can turn up to five reels wild, often leading to big payout combos.
- Wild symbol — Standard wilds substitute for most other symbols, helping complete winning lines.
RTP, volatility and winning potential
Immortal Romance carries an RTP (return to player) that is commonly cited around 96.86%, which is competitive among popular online slots. Volatility is generally considered medium-to-high; sessions can be a mix of steady smaller wins with occasional larger payouts when features align. The Wild Desire and Chamber of Spins rounds are the primary paths to significant wins, so landing those features is key to boosting your payout potential.
Graphics, audio and theme
The game nails its gothic-romance vibe with moody visuals, dark palettes and cinematic cut-scenes when bonuses trigger. Character portraits and dramatic animations give the slot personality beyond the usual fruit-machine styling. The soundtrack enhances the atmosphere with sweeping, eerie cues that suit the vampire-love storyline. Overall, presentation is a strong point and helps the title feel immersive even after many spins.
Mobile play and performance
Immortal Romance is well optimised for mobile devices. Microgaming’s HTML5 implementation means the slot runs smoothly on iOS and Android phones and tablets without a dedicated app. Controls are simplified for touch play, and visual fidelity holds up on smaller screens. For New Zealand players who favour gaming on the go, the experience is reliable and responsive.
Betting range and bankroll management
The game offers a flexible betting range to suit cautious punters and higher-stake players alike. Because volatility can swing outcomes, it’s wise to set sensible session limits and try the game in demo mode first if you’re unfamiliar with its rhythms. Manage your bankroll by adjusting bet sizes based on how often you like to spin and whether you prefer chasing bonus features.
Tips for New Zealand players
- Try the demo version to explore the Chamber of Spins and Wild Desire without risking real money.
- Keep an eye on session length and stick to a pre-set budget — volatility means dry spells are possible.
- Look for reputable NZ-friendly casinos that offer Microgaming titles and ensure secure banking options.
- Use the game’s autoplay features with caution; manual play helps you feel more in control when features are about to trigger.

Final thoughts on playability
From a reviewer’s perspective, Immortal Romance remains a highly playable and engaging slot for players in New Zealand. Its combination of atmosphere, varied bonus rounds and the headline-grabbing Wild Desire feature keeps it interesting session after session. While it’s not a quick-hit slot for constant small wins, those who enjoy features and a strong theme will find plenty to like.
